PLEASE WEIGH IN ON BEAR HUNT - TONIGHT!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to open the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge to bear hunting, as part of the agency's "Alternative B" preferred management plan for the refuge. There will be an open house and public hearing on this proposal TONIGHT, February 21, from 6-9 p.m. at the Sussex Wantage Branch Library, 69 Route 639, Wantage, NJ 07461. A hearing last night in Augusta was stacked with animal rights extremists. It is important that you make your voice heard at tonight's hearing.

Limited bear hunting in New Jersey is urgently needed and long overdue as a public safety measure to address the epidemic of dramatic bear attacks that have occurred in recent years. Recent scheduled bear hunts have been scuttled by a number of New Jersey's public officials.
Written public comment can also be made until March 10th. For more information on the Wallkill proposal, see www.fws.gov/northeast/wallkillriver, e-mail wallkillriver at fws.gov, or call (973) 702-7266. To ensure the future of hunting on the refuge, public involvement is crucial. Please submit comments and/or attend tonight's hearing in support of "Alternative B."

For more information on New Jersey's out of control black bear population and its public safety implications, please see a 2003 New Jersey Star-Ledger op-ed here.
